I-86/I-99 Corridor Study
Three Rivers Development Foundation has completed an "Economic Development Blueprint" for the I-86/I-99 Interstate highway corridor in southeast Steuben County. The intersection of Interstate highways 86 and 99 in Painted Post represents a significant opportunity for economic development in the surrounding area. The project was funded by grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission and Three Rivers Development Foundation. Peter j Smith, an economic development and planning firm based in Buffalo, NY, was engaged to lead the process, with mapping and other technical assistance provided by Hunt Engineers of Big Flats, NY. A consortium of representatives from the corridor area were involved, including the City of Corning, Towns of Corning, Campbell, Erwin, and Lindley, and Villages of Riverside and Painted Post, as well as the Southern Tier Regional Planning and Development Board. "This kind of work is necessary if we are going to strategically position these municipalities to maximize opportunities for economic development," said Jack Benjamin, President of Three Rivers Development Foundation. "Our goal is to position our area to work effectively with agencies, developers, businesses, and landowners over the next 10-15 years, and the interstate highway intersection will attract opportunities," said Benjamin.
